Clare Sheng
Clare manages the Student Journalism for China Program at IREX. The program assists Chinese high schools to establish viable and sustainable student-run newspapers, a first-of-its kind program in western China.
Clare oversees day-to-day operations of the program; coordinates with educators and consultants on curriculum development, in-service training, and advising; facilitates dialogue between Chinese and American journalism students; cultivates relations with education and media professionals in China and the United States; and conducts monitoring and evaluation activities in the field.
Prior to joining IREX, Clare worked in China and Lesotho on HIV and Malaria prevention programs targeting youth, injecting drug users, sex workers, and factory workers. Clare also worked with women law practitioners in Albania and Indonesia on women’s legal rights, especially pertaining to domestic violence and access to the judiciary system. In Tanzania, Clare worked with a local NGO in preserving indigenous music and taught young Massai warriors conversational English.
Clare received an MA from American University in Comparative Regional Studies and International Development.
